Erik Clawson Hoffman, 19, has been called to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elder Hoffman will be serving in the Michigan Lansing Mission and will enter the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, on Aug. 5.
Erik is a 2008 Sierra High School graduate and the son of Buzz and Carla Hoffman. He has 3 older brothers, Craig, Brad and Todd Henderson and a younger sister Lorie Hoffman who is a senior at Sierra High. The Michigan Lansing Mission is one of the 348 missions world-wide. It is bordered by four of the five Great Lakes, and also has over 11,000 lakes within the state. Erik will be one of the 52,494 missionaries currently serving full-time 2 year missions for their church.
During his high school years, Erik participated in tennis and track and was a member of the Wolf Pack Club and the Star Wars Club, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Erik attended early morning seminary (6 a.m.) which helped him to stay strong in his values while attending high school. Erik completed a semester at Delta College and plans to continue his education in Utah when he returns home from his mission.
For the past year he has been employed by “Give Every Child a Chance,” an after school program for children in grades 1 through 8. He worked directly with the students at Banta School in Banta. It was a very rewarding job and Erik loved interacting with and helping the children. This employment enabled Erik to earn money towards supporting himself on his mission. Missionaries typically spend their own money for living expenses during the two years they are serving.
Erik’s family enjoys traveling, especially taking their annual family vacation to Florida, where they enjoy the company of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. The close family unit enjoys swimming, entertaining friends, playing games and hanging out together. Erik has nine nieces and nephews, and has fun being an uncle to all of them. His favorite pastimes are playing basketball with his brothers, swimming and fishing with his dad, and playing all kinds of games with his friends.
Erik is grateful that his parents have always supported and been there for him. Speaking lovingly of his father and mother, Erik said his father has been the most influential person in his life, is hard working, and loves his family. His mother, Carla is “the best mom ever plus a fantastic person.” Erik is striving to follow in the footsteps of his brothers Craig, Brad and Todd. He is proud of how they have served missions, graduated from college and graduate school, started families, have good careers, and how they live their lives in general.
Erik is excited to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the people of Michigan. His parents believe that his social skills are outstanding, and people will respond well to him because of his genuine interest in them. He has prepared physically and spiritually for his mission and is eager to meet and teach the people of Michigan. Erik’s enthusiasm spills over when he talks about the Savior, and he plans to serve with all of his heart.
