“Cissy” of “Family Affair” fame is speaking in Manteca during the eight annual Women’s Connection networking event on Friday, Feb. 5.
Kathy Garver who played “Cissy” in the popular situation TV comedy series that ran on CBS from Sept. 12, 1966 to Sept. 9, 1971 is one of two keynote speakers for the Manteca Convention & Visitors Bureau conference taking place at the Calvary Community Church, 815 W. Lathrop Road, on Feb, 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The $40 ticket covers networking, speakers, fashion show, breakout sessions, and lunch. Tradeshow booths are $100 and include a ticket. For tickets or more information call the CVB at 823-7229.
The other keynote speaker is Mike Midgley from TV’s “Top Chef.”
Break-out sessions include meals in minutes, sleep disorders, safe internet surfing, bless this mess, nutrition, and woman to woman workplace relationships
Although Graver is remembered for her starring role as “Cissy” in “Family Affair”, she has also garnered critical acclaim in movies, stage, radio, voice-over animation, and audio book narration.
‘Family Affair’ was based on the premise that the parents of Cissy and her younger brother and sister were killed in an auto accident a year before relatives – who no longer wanted to look after the kids – sent them from Terra Haute in Indiana to live with their father’s brother played by Brian Keith
Uncle Bill as he was called by the kids was an engineer who did major projects around the globe. Sebastian Cabot playing Mr. French ends up going from being a gentleman’s gentleman to a surrogate nanny. The series name refers to how the five gel as a “family.”
The legendary producer Cecil B. DeMille first took note of Garver while she was playing a little girl in “The Ten Commandments” following her first movie, “The Night of the Hunter” directed by Academy Award winner, Charles Laughton.
She was a freshman majoring in speech at UCLA when she was picked for the role of “Cissy”. The show starred Brian Keith as “Uncle Bill” and Sebastian Cabot as “Mr. French”.
“Brian Keith only worked for about half the production schedule so the rest of us would have to film scenes from as many as six different episodes in one day”, Garver noted on her website. “I actually had to do most of my close ups opposite the assistant director, a paunchy middle aged man glued to a cigar. I had to use a lot of imagination to see him as my six year old sister, Buffy!”
The San Mateo resident’s voice has been used for everything for the audio books of the Beatrix Potter tales to “Apollo 13”, “Back Draft” and “Jingle all the Way”.
The Women’s Conference ha returned to its original format as a one-day event after last year’s attempt to mix it up by splitting it into quarterly lunches.
