Two South County women have been recognized for their outstanding achievements by State Senator Lois Wolk in her Stockton office.
Honored as women of the year were:
•Carol Davis, who heads up the Give Every Child a Chance tutoring organization headquartered in Manteca.
•Mary Kennedy-Bracken CEO of the Lathrop Chamber of Commerce.
Under Davis’ leadership, the free community-based tutoring organization has grown from offering its non-profit volunteer services to just 69 children in 1998 to serving over 4,250 in the last school year. Her annual budget has increased from $89,000 in 2001 to more than $2 million today.
Davis began her career with Kaiser Permanente in 1976. She retired after 25 years in 2000 to join the staff of GECAC as its president and CEO.
She currently serves on the San Joaquin County Children’s Service Coordinating Commission’s board of directors. Through a seat on that board she is an active member of the annual children’s symposium which offers education to the community in topics of concern.
Davis was also a founding committee member for the Manteca Women’s Connection celebrating women in business through an annual symposium. She has also served on the Manteca Boys and Girls Club board for seven years and is an active member of the Manteca Sunrise Kiwanis Club serving on its board of directors.
Davis is also the chief financial officer for the Manteca Unified Student Trust, having served on that board since its inception. In 2004 she was recognized by the California State Assembly as the Woman of the Year for the 26th district.
Kennedy-Bracken has spoken professionally since 1989 as a motivational and keynote speaker. Mary is also the CEO for Turn Your Passion into Profit, a speaking institution that was founded on the concept and belief that expressing oneself through effective communication is an essential skill needed in today’s global society. As a former producer and talk show host, she has been afforded the opportunity to discuss and array of “hot button topics” evolving around public speaking and public affairs.
She also serves as president of the Lathrop Sunrise Rotary Club, and is a former member of the Bay Area Speakers Services and a lifetime member of the NAACP.
She is currently the vice president of Education for Toastmaster in Lathrop.
Kennedy-Bracken has been endorsed by author Dennis Kimbro and renowned motivational speaker Les Brown as being a strong motivational speaker having shared the stage with Martin Luther King, III.
Senator Wolk presented similar honors to Mercedes Rea Silveira-Gouveia of Stockton and to Van Ha To-Cowell of Tracy.
