Smoke in the attic of a rural grocery store-deli north of Escalon Monday morning brought four fire departments to a blaze that lasted over an hour and a half.
Escalon called for mutual-aid from other departments including Collegeville, Lathrop-Manteca and Ripon apparently fearing they could lose the Rossetti’s Corner Grocery building if they couldn’t control the elusive fire themselves.  The other departments brought two additional water tankers to the building located on the northwest corner of Escalon-Belotta Road since its rural location had no fire hydrants.
In addition to the fire damage there was heavy smoke damage throughout the store as smoke continued to waft out the front door and from the roof for over an hour.
The scene was a couple of miles north of Escalon High School and east of Manteca.
Rossetti’s has been on that corner for some 30 years.  It includes a small restaurant that serves beer, sandwiches and coffee.
