A Technology Outreach Program (TOP) is being offered July 13 through July 29 at no cost to children, senior citizens and adults courtesy of Give Every Child A Chance and Best Buy.
The classes are scheduled to be held aboard the white TOP bus parked at Manteca’s Best Buy in the Bass Pro Shopping Center beginning Monday.
The senior citizen program is scheduled for two hours from 10 a.m. until noon, and the children will be welcomed aboard between 2 and 4 p.m. Adult sessions are scheduled from 6 until 8 p.m.
The 10 a.m. classes on Mondays for seniors include digital photography, cell phone features and usage, and computer and Internet basics.
The class will teach the taking of a photo, managing photos on the camera, storing pictures on the computer and printing photos from the P.C.
On Tuesdays the seniors will learn all about texting, picture mail, cell phone camera features, Bluetooth syncing to a PC and to a headset. On Wednesdays the seniors’ class will cover the basics of computers and Internet usage. There will be tips for typing, printing and e-mailing.
The children’s classes begin with kids’ camera camp – days 1, 2 and 3. The kids will be led through a photographic journey. They will learn the basics of point-and-shoot photography, how to upload photographs, basic photo editing, printing, e-mailing and other ways to share.
Photos from the Kids’ Camera Camp will be displayed at Best Buy Manteca for their friends and relatives to see and enjoy. Children are urged to bring a camera if they own one. There will be several cameras available for use in the three day camp.
Adults meeting at 6 p.m. will cover cyber safety, digital photography using DSLR cameras and computer security and maintenance.
The first class will cover effective use of parental controls, advantages and disadvantages of social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook – learning how to protect children from stranger danger.
The adult classes will also cover digital photography and the use of DSLR cameras for those who own an SLR digital camera. This promises to be a hands-on course with personalized attention. The photographic elements such as time and light and how to use the pre-sets will all be covered.
Computer security and maintenance will teach easy routing maintenance procedures for the home computer. What malware can do to the computer will be covered as well as showing the class how to prevent threats.
The class includes a complimentary PC assessment to check out students’ computers while they learn.
