City leaders tonight are expected to authorize spending $51,710 to equip the solid waste vehicle fleet with a maintenance program that utilizes a global position system. It will, among other uses, keep track of a garbage truck’s location and activity. The main benefit though is to monitor the onboard diagnostic systems to immediately notify the vehicle maintenance shop of any problems. The GPS operation is compatible to maintenance software already in use at the municipal garage.
That is expected to allow mechanics to identify issues early to reduce expensive repairs.
At the same time the system will track idle time to increase route efficiency.
The system can be expanded at a later date to other departments if the council so desires.
The money is budgeted in the solid waste enterprise fund and does not impact the general fund that is running a projected $3.8 million deficit for the fiscal year starting July 1.
Law prohibits money from enterprise accounts that are funded by ratepayers using services to be used for general fund expenses.
The City Council meets at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center, 1001 W. Center St.
