The Magicians of basketball return to San Joaquin County for another entertaining exhibition of hoops.

For 84 years, the Harlem Globetrotters have thrilled audiences of all ages from around the world, playing more than 25,000 games while entertaining popes and U.S. presidents.

The Ambassadors of Goodwill will bring their “2010 Magical Memories Tour” to the Stockton Arena, 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14.

But before that day, Buckets Blakes is scheduled to make a visit this morning at Martin Luther King Elementary School in Stockton.

The 6-2 guard from the University of the Wyoming will be on hand to present the Globetrotters’ widely popular “CHEER (Cooperation, Healthy mind & body, Effort, Enthusiasm, and Responsibility) for Character” program, educating youngsters age 6 through 12 to care about school and each other in order to better prepare for the challenges ahead as young adults.

The school visit coincides with the Globetrotters’ six-month tour that kicked off last month.

Blakes’ work ethic mimics that of the CHEER program.

At Wyoming, he was team captain and MVP during his final two seasons, leading the team in rebounding, assists and steals as a junior, and becoming one of only two players in the Mountain West Conference to finish in the top 15 in scoring, rebounding and assists during his senior year.

Blakes has been a Globetrotters for the past eight years, following in the footsteps of the legendary players of the past – Meadowlark Lemon, Marques Haynes, Curly Neal, Goose Tatum, to name a few.

Not forgotten is the team’s signature song which is a whistled version of “Sweet Georgia Brown.”

The Globetrotters’ current tour includes 270 shows in over 200 cities in 44 states, the District of Columbia, five Canadian provinces and Puerto Rico.

Tickets start at $21 and are available at the Stockton Arena ticket office or online at www.stocktontickets.com, www.stocktonarena.com, and www.ticketmaster.com.
