Robin Taberna is gearing up for Saturday’s Golden State Karate Association-sponsored Martial Arts Open.
“This one and my own are the only two (tournaments) that I sponsor each year,” said the master instructor on Tuesday.
He’s a 5th degree black belt in tae kwon do and professor 7th dan in go shin jitsu-kai. Taberna has taught martial arts for over 30 years, including to youngsters at the Boys & Girls Club of Manteca gym.
The Martial Arts Open will take place at Manteca High, 450 E. Yosemite Ave. Action is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
For the top finishers, the GSKA tournament will consist of 20 junior events along with grand champion trophies, men’s black belt, sparring grand, adult black belt forms grand, and first-time competitor divisions.
Admission is $10 for adults, $8 seniors (age 62 and up) and $5 for youngsters age 6 through 12. Doors open at 8 o’clock for registration.
