It’s still not too late to make a donation to Goodwill.
David Miller, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of San Joaquin Valley, recently said such items can be dropped off at any of the sites prior to Dec. 31.
“In December, donations double in volume,” he said. “On that last week (of the year), we’re expecting to receive and process five times our customary donations.
“We’re all ready and grateful.”
The social enterprise business model for Goodwill is a familiar one.
The agency relies on public donations of used clothing and household goods which are sold in its stores. Each store creates 20 to 25 job opportunities. All profits generated by Goodwill stores are used to fund the costs of job training and placement programs for those with disadvantages.
“It’s the concept of offering a hand up, not a hand out,” Miller said. “Because of donated goods from the public, we were able to provide job services to more than 5,000 people this year.”
Goodwill is also expanding its presence in neighborhoods.
The agency is working with shopping centers, malls and municipalities to create attractive, welcoming Community Donation Centers that make recycling and reuse for neighborhoods more convenient.
Earl Brown, business development manager for Goodwill, started the expansion project by redesigning the Donation Centers. The modern, colorful, fully wrapped donation units were created by WMB Architects of Stockton, Power Marketing and Haas Graphics.
One can be found in Manteca at the old Mervyn’s parking lot.
The others are located in Lincoln Village West at Marina Market (Stockton); Brookside at Palm Crossing (Stockton) and West Valley Mall in Tracy.
Last Friday, Weberstown Mall in Stockton replaced its current unit with a newly designed Community Donation Center.
