Eight hopefuls are seeking election to the Manteca City Council on Nov. 2.

Barring any last-minute filings before today’s 5 p.m. deadline, four candidates will appear on the ballot for the mayor’s post while four will seek two council seats.

The race will be the third time Willie Weatherford and Carlon Perry have squared off for mayor. Perry defeated Weatherford in 1998. Weatherford followed that up in 2002 by defeating Perry. Weatherford ran unopposed in 2006.

Both Weatherford and Perry have already had their nomination signatures of voters verified by the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters. Signatures on nomination papers for Weatherford’s other two challengers - council member Debby Moorhead and retired municipal planner Ben Cantu - are in the process of being verified.

Incumbents Vince Hernandez and John Harris are seeking re-election to two council seats. They are being challenged by Richard Behling and Samuel Anderson.
