Heirloom tomatoes, pruning roses part of Manteca Garden Club program series

Master Gardener Lee Miller will be the guest speaker at the Monday, Jan. 16, meeting of the Manteca Garden Club. Miller’s presentation will be on the topic of heirloom tomatoes.

The winners in the Smokey Bear poster contest also will be announced at that time by Frances Ramos, who organized the effort with the Manteca Unified School District. Club member Jan Epperson worked with the members of the Manteca Artist Guild, of which she is a member, to judge the poster entries.

The meeting will be held in the John McFall Room of the Manteca Public Library, 320 W. Center Street. Refreshments will be served at 12:30 p.m. followed by the meeting at 1 p.m.

Upcoming activities and meetings of the garden club:

• Saturday, Jan. 21 – Master Gardeners program with the topic, “Fill your own fruit bowl.” The program will talk about how you can have your own backyard orchard.

• Tuesday, Feb. 14 – The Manteca Garden Club will mark Valentine’s Day by hosting the Valley Lode District meeting at Chez Shari in the Manteca Golf Course clubhouse on Union Road. This event will replace the club’s usual meeting in February.

• Saturday, Feb. 18 – Club member Hank Wiegel and the Master Gardeners will demonstrate trimming roses for the winter. The demonstration will take place at the Manteca Senior Center on Cherry Lane just behind the civic center on West Center Street.
