The Spartans GREAT rally Tuesday was a time for recognition and celebration.
Recognized was the Lathrop High School Academic Decathlon team coached by Hillary and Michael Pangburn.
The group tied for first place – with Manteca High – in the Super Quiz competition some two months earlier at the San Joaquin County Office of Education’s 36th annual event held at the LHS gymnasium.
“That was our best showing ever,” said Hillary Pangburn, who also noted that several of those students won scholarships that day.
Recognized were 144 students who earned Spartan Gold by posting a grade point average of 4.0 or better.
Included in that prestigious group were Navneet Garcha and Natasha Prasad, who were announced as the top academic students in their senior class.
Garcha will serve as valedictorian while Prasad is salutatorian for the Class of 2017 graduation ceremonies in a few months.
Another 41 students were recognized for perfect attendance.
All told, the Spartans GREAT rally was a celebration for 700 students at the school, according to Assistant Principal Greg Leland.
Along with Spartan Gold, some earned Spartan Silver and Spartan Onyx.
For the better part of the past seven years, LHS has held this academic rally that also serves as an incentive for students to achieve in school, according to Athletic Director Nicole Burrows.
Honored as well were parents of these students – they were assigned a special seating area towards the front of the staging area.
Local businesses and a variety of sponsors also made possible this event.
