MHS hall of fame
Former Manteca High administrator Telka Walser presents the Hall of Fame award to standout running back Gilbert Martinez during Friday’s induction recognition to the Buffaloes’ 2001 Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Championship team.

The 2001 Manteca High football squad was the first in school history to hoist a Sac-Joaquin Section banner.

Since then, the Buffaloes have managed to captured SJS crowns in 2005, 2006, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2022.

“The 2001 Buffs were more than champions – they were pioneers,” according to MHS at Friday’s Hall of Fame recognition event of the Class of 2025.

The school also recognized Pete Nelson, Ranata Scholl, and Paul Brogan.

The induction ceremony took place at halftime of the Valley Oak League basketball clash between the Buffaloes and Patterson – the visiting Tigers defeated MHS, 46-38, in the race for the third and final automatic playoff berth.

Nelson was the first to be inducted into the Hall of Fame Class of 2025.

He was a three-sport athlete, earning eight varsity letters while completing over 4,000 yards of passing and scoring 44 touchdowns during football playing days for the Buffaloes. Nelson was a three-time all-area selection.

The newest members of the MHS Hall of Fame met earlier that evening. It was there that Nelson was described as “a great athlete, a great son, a great student, and a great citizen.”

During her four years at MHS, Scholl was an accomplished tennis player, winning the Sac-Joaquin Section singles title in 1982, in turn, earning the first-ever section title at the school.

She also played basketball for the Buffaloes, helping them bring home a section title in 1984.

Scholl continued to play tennis at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, and continued her success in league play while competing in the Nationals.

Brogan was an outstanding basketball player at MHS as well as in college.

During his playing days for the Buffaloes, he was team’s MVP and also made first-team all-Valley Oak League.

Brogan then played two years at Modesto Junior College before moving over to Stanislaus State. As a member of the Stan State men’s basketball team, he was named league MVP and still holds the record for most 3 pointers made.

In 2001, Brogan was inducted into the Stan State Hall of Fame. He later became a teacher at MHS and then went on to become a professor of health and kinesiology at MJC.
