Those buying liquor for gatherings marking the end of 2021 are buying tequila, whiskey, and similar spirits.
“It’s been that kind of year,” noted Mike Morowit who has owned Miner Mart Liquors in Lincoln Center anchored by Hafer’s Furniture on West Yosemite Avenue for the past 27 years.
Sales are also brisk when it comes to beer, especially the larger variety of craft beers that he carries.
Morowit has been gearing up for the holiday season months earlier than usual as the global supply chain snafu has impacted the availability of some beers and spirits. For a while, as an example, it was impossible to secure imported beer such as Corona and Modelo.
Due to his foresight in placing orders earlier than usual Morowit says he has adequate supplies of trendy and popular champagnes and high end spirits buyers gravitate to this time of year to celebrate the holidays and usher in the New Year.
That includes a trendy favorite this year with those in their 20s and 30s — Belaire Bleu champagne imported from France.
He also has high end spirits that some prefer for special occasions ranging from $189 bottles of Don Julio 1942 tequila to the $300 bottle of McCallum’s Scotch whiskey.
“It’s what some people buy when they want to spoil themselves,” Morowit said.
As for Morowit when he closes shop at 11:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, he’s heading home with a bottle of champagne to toast the start of 2022 with family.
Morowit noted liquor stores like his thrive with chain store competition growing because they don’t just concentrate on the top 10 brands.
“We have a real wide selection and lots of craft beers,” Morowit said. “And if you want something special we can order it for you.”
It also helps that Morowit and his staff will banter with regular customers creating a true neighborhood store experience.
“It’s something along with selection and service that (the bigger guys) don’t have,” Morowit added.
