A hodge podge of aging portables, outdated classrooms and a shop space that’s more than 50 years old serving career and technical education students at Manteca High will be replaced with modern facilities when the next school year starts.
The work along Mikesell Street is part of the $260 million Measure A school bond voters approved in November 2020 to modernize existing campuses by addressing everything from aging infrastructure and problematic classrooms to security concerns.
It includes a 7,400-square-foot CTE shop outfitted for wood working along with two classrooms.
An adjoining two-story building includes a wing of eight CTE appropriate classrooms.
They are planned as classroom space for health careers, digital photo, nutrition, child development and potentially interior design.
The portion of the two-story structure dedicated to CTE class is approximately 10,000 square feet.
The multi-story structure will also have 12 additional classrooms.
Altogether, the current project at the Manteca High campus will provide 22 replacement classrooms plus a replacement wood shop.
The existing wood shop will be converted to a weight room.
The completion of the shop will mean all of the district’s five comprehensive high school campuses will have modern facilities to support the district’s robust CTE offerings.
Class enrollment data shows that in the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year 47 percent of the ninth through 12th graders in Manteca Unified were taking CTE courses.
Work also under way between now and the start of the next school year at Manteca High includes utility installation for the second increment of campus construction and theatrical lighting upgrades.
Measure A related work for the 2026-2027 school year includes:
*Demolition of existing classroom wings on the west side of the campus.
*The modernization and expansion of the administration building.
*The conversion of the library to art classrooms.
Tentatively scheduled for 2027-2028 are:
*Completion of the 2-story L-wing (similar to what is now being built along Union Road on the East Union High campus) that includes 31 replacement classrooms and a media center.
*Expansion of the cafeteria.
*Removal of all portable classrooms.
*Stadium parking lot expansion along Mikesell.
