5 local high school musicians earn honors

Sebastian Fiallos of Sierra High and Renato Balingit of Manteca High – sixth and seventh, respectively, from the left – were among those honored with the Nelson Zane Four-Year Award in Band.

The Nelson Zane Four-Year Award via the San Joaquin County Office of Education honors outstanding area musicians.

This year, 31 including five local students were recently recognized for meeting the high standards in either Band, Choir or Orchestra throughout their four years of high schools.

The 2023 Nelson Zane Award recipients consisted of Renato Balingit of Manteca High and Sebastian Fiallos of Sierra High in Band, Taryn Escola of Ripon High in Choir, and Katie Kim of MHS and Marisa Rush of SHS in Orchestra.

The award honors the memory of Nelson Zane, who passed away in February 2011.

As for the award winners, they were recognized at the 2023 San Joaquin County Concert, which consisted of three consecutive ensemble concerts on Jan. 14.
