Car drives into Manteca store

Manteca got its first drive-thru liquor store on Thursday afternoon.

The only problem? There weren’t any formal plans to turn Miner Mart into a drive-thru.

According to owner Mike Morowit, it was a customer of a nearby business that authorities believe mistook her brake for her gas pedal that drove through the window of his longtime store and into the ice box on the other side of the wall.

There were no injuries in the collision, but the vehicle appears to have done structural damage to the building itself and knocked over cases of beer and liquor bottles inside of the store. Morowit said that it’s too early to tell the scope of the damages, but that the woman – believed to be a senior citizen – had insurance that should take care of anything.

“It was just kind of crazy – I wasn’t there when it happened, but I got the call,” said Morowit. “It’s the first time in 24 years that we’ve had anything like this happen.”

Morowit thanked both the Manteca Police and Fire Departments for their professionalism in responding to the call, and for making sure that the woman was safe and well cared for.
