The effort to “homeless proof” downtown continues.

This time the Manteca City Council has approved a letter of support requested by a downtown church in that organization’s bid to obtain a security grant from the California Office of Emergency Services.

The Courts of Praise Community Church at Main and North streets is seeking  funding to install fencing, windows, doors, lighting and cameras to make the properties more secure.

The council, in the letter, noted Courts of Praise is dedicated to the well-being of the community.

Efforts include feeding and clothing the homeless, providing counseling services to couples and assisting in healing marriages, organizing food giveaways, and facilitating Bible studies for adults and youth.

They also share their facilities with three Spanish-speaking churches.

“By doing so, they foster a sense of inclusivity and unity, strengthening the bond among different cultural and religious communities,” according to the letter that will be signed by Mayor Gary Singh on behalf of the council.

Courts of Praise recently purchased a property that included two older buildings that require renovation and upgrading to enhance security measures on the premises.

They have since encountered challenges in the form of break-ins, homeless encampments, and acts of vandalism.

Across the street, the FESM recently finished securing their two halls with wrought iron security fencing to address similar problems.

Other downtown concerns have taken similar steps including the City of Manteca when they secured the library courtyard to avoid homeless sleeping there that led to vandalism and daily trash that municipal crews had to clear out before the library could open.
