A 27-year-old Manteca man wanted for a parole violation made an unsuccessful bid Thursday to escape arrest.

Three police agencies – the CHP, Manteca Police and the Delta Auto Theft Task Force – swarmed the Magna Terra neighborhood east and north of Doctors Hospital shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday to serve a felony arrest warrant on Joseph Chisom.

For nearly two hours a CHP helicopter circled overhead while officers brought a canine to the 1300 block of Michell Lane where it intersects with Lovell Way north of North Street before apprehending Chisom.

When officers arrived at 1395 Michell Lane to conduct a probation search, Chisom opened the garage door by hand. Seeing officers he turned and ran out the side door away from the officers.  Chisom began leaping over fences to the west toward Stafford Avenue.  Based on Chisom’s reported history of running from police, a perimeter of officers had already been set up and police were confident he had hunkered down within that net after fleeing from the garage.

With the assistance of the CHP helicopter, the Stockton Police drone, Manteca officers and detectives and a CHP canine worked in concert to apprehend Chisom who was eventually located by the canine underneath the undercarriage of a box truck.  He was bit on the upper right shoulder by the canine.  Officers pulled him free and walked him to the nearby emergency room of Doctors Hospital for treatment of his dog bites.

Police then searched the Michell Lane address and located a red motorcycle stolen out of Manteca between two cars covered with tarps in the driveway as residents from the man’s residence cursed officers One woman across the street stood in her front yard with her hands raised and cheered the officers’ efforts.   .

Chisom was charged with vehicle theft, defacing a vehicle identification (VIN) number, resisting arrest and for the warrant police had been attempting to serve him for violation of his current probation status. He was transported to the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp.
