False report of active shooter ends in arrest
crime

The call that Manteca Police dispatch received shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday about a man with a gun at a home in the 400 block of California Avenue in the Powers Tract neighborhood east of Manteca High sparked a full police response and kept the Manteca Fire Department and Manteca District Ambulance waiting in the wings.

It even brought on a call for the Stanislaus County air support helicopter.

And it was all for not.

Maria Lumidao, 58, was arrested by Manteca Police shortly thereafter for filing a false police report and public intoxication after officers learned that her claims to dispatchers – which included alleging that her husband was armed with a handgun, that their 9-year-old grandson was inside, and that he eventually went outside with the boy and began firing into the air – were false.

Eventually all of the parties in the house came outside willingly and none were found to have suffered any injuries.

The emergency response rattled the neighborhood. The request for air support was cancelled as the situation was resolved shortly thereafter.
