The goal for Safe Routes to School is to promote health and fitness by getting children to enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment.
An example of that is Parkview Safe Route to School Project of a few years ago. Safety crossing measures consisting bikeway striping, speed radar signs and flashing beacons were installed along the area of Park View Elementary School.
Next up is the Ripon Safe Routes to School Improvements.
On Tuesday, the Ripon City Council approved the Measure K Renewal Cooperative Agreement with the San Joaquin Council of Governments, in order to obtain reimbursement for the project with the San Joaquin Council of Government, acting as the Local Transportation Authority.
The project will provide improvements on four key roadways, including:
- Second Street – Installing a Class III bikeway equipped with signage to indicate preferred the bike route, from South Wilma Avenue to South Stockton Avenue; completion of intersection improvements at South Acacia Avenue, South Locust Avenue, and South Stockton Avenue, including curb extensions to reduce the length of crosswalks and high visibility markers or pavers.
- North and South Acacia Avenue – Putting in Class III bikeways from Doak Boulevard to the Highway 99 overcrossing.
- Prospect Avenue – Adding Class III bikeways as well as a crossing upgrade at the Frontage Road intersection, which will incorporate a rectangular rapid-flashing beacon and median refuge for pedestrians.
- Ripona Avenue – Installing Class II bikeways from Milgeo Avenue to California Street.
The project also aligns with the Downtown Circulation Study Streetscape Improvements Master Plan, adopted by elected leaders last July.
According to Senior Civil Engineer Sarah Collins’ staff report, the project was eligible for funds within the Smart Growth Incentive Program – in this case, the Local Transportation Improvement Plan.
SJCOG authorized Measure K Renewal funds to the City of Ripon via the Local Transportation Improvement Plan – the City was awarded $845,252 of the Measure K funds.
