GIVING FAMILIES HOPE IN 2021

A Ray of Hope volunteers spent a Sunday working on the Ray of Hope Kids Cupboard Emergency Food Pantry.

The need doesn’t go away with the passing of the holidays.

The local non-profit Ray of Hope Children’s Crisis and Resources Services is continuing its efforts of replenishing the Kids Cupboard Emergency Food Pantry.

That’s on top of the domestic violence relocation program for displaced families.

“They’re left with nothing (after being forced to leave their home due to domestic violence),” said Ray of Hope Executive Director Laura Vieira-Saunders on Thursday.

On Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m., Ray of Hope – located at 113 W. Yosemite Ave. – will be collecting crib sheets for these children with immediate needs. “No contact donating. Just leave at the steps or have someone get (the donations) from your car,” she said.

Ray of Hope’s other ongoing drive includes the Babies In Crisis Program, where diapers, baby formula, wipes and hygiene products.

Securing donations for the food pantry is a top priority.

“Christmas is fun but then afterwards is when we really need help,” said Vieira-Saunders, who is in the process of opening Children’s Shop – more on that.

She’s thankful of the food items coming in to provide three-meals-a-day to children of the program. However, Vieira-Saunders’ growing concerns include the COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of jobs among parents.

“People are realizing that it’s hard to feed their kids. Take the single mom, struggling to make ends meet while trying to collect unemployment,” she added.

Ray of Hope expressed thanks to people dropping off food items to help the cause.

The re-opening of the thrift store near Hafer’s Home Furnishings could also be helpful.

“Any revenue from the store will go back to the kids,” Vieira-Saunders said.
