Homeless expected to start transitioning into 50 shelter beds soon’
homeless dorms
The homeless dorms arrived at 555 Industrial Park Drive in mid-December.

The final electrical inspection for portable dorms to provide beds for up to 50 homeless at 555 Industrial Park Drive was scheduled to be completed on Monday.

That will allow His Way Recovery that the city is contracting with to run emergency services for the homeless at that location to start transitioning individuals into the two dorms designed to hold 25 beds each.

There are currently between 85 and 105 homeless on any given day accessing services.

Many stay overnight in tents as well as vehicles within the secured fenced in area.

There is a security guard on site 24/7 including one that is armed while on overnight duty.

A point in time count conducted in January is in the process of being compiled.

That’s said, the 105 number represents almost half of the 218 homeless individuals that were tallied living on the streets in Manteca based on a 2019 count.

One dorm will be for men and the other for women.

That means less than 50 homeless could end up with beds given the vast majority are men.

It is why City Manager Toni Lundgren said Manteca is exploring the possibility of getting additional portable dorms in place that would allow to 100 homeless to be housed.

The city has portables in placed that provide a kitchen, a day room, and showers/bathrooms.

The portables, once the permanent homeless navigation center is built and open off of Carnegie Court two blocks away, are expected to be moved to that location.
