Two events are taking place in Manteca Saturday, Sept. 21, to serve the community and to foster peace.

They are the International Day of Peace observation being staged by the Manteca Interfaith Community Appeal and the Manteca Day of Service with projects involving painting fire hydrants, cleaning up the Tidewater Bikeway, and sprucing up East Union Cemetery that is being sponsored by JustServe.org.

Day of Peace observance

The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on Sept. 21.  This is a day devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”

MICA, Manteca Interfaith Community Appeal invites you to the 4th Annual International Day of Peace community event taking place from 6 to 7 p.m.   The event will be held at the Civic Center quad, 252 Magnolia Street. It is being hosted by members of MICA:  St. Paul’s United Methodist church, Transformed through Hope Ministries, The Sikh Community, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Islamic Center of Manteca, The Bahai faith, and the Seventh-day Adventist church.

The program for Peace Day will feature local community leaders and members of the various churches, including adults and youth.  Though this event cannot change the whole world, MICA hopes to inspire and motivate people to strive to live in peace and harmony with our fellow man right here in Manteca.

Day of Service

Starting earlier on the same day, the Manteca Day of Service, sponsored by JustServe.org, offers three opportunities to beautify the city of Manteca.

First is a fun project for adults and teens, to paint fire hydrants around town. This will involve wiping down the hydrant, putting down cardboard protection, and then painting.

Another is the Tidewater Bikeway cleanup is a perfect project for anyone, including families with younger children. The goal is to clear the length of the bikeway of trash and debris.

The third project is at the 147-year- old East Union Cemetery. It is suitable for all ages, and includes weeding, trimming around headstones, and re-positioning markers which have sunk.

Manteca’s Day of Service is from 8:30 a.m. to  noon, Saturday Sept. 21. For further details, including where to meet and what to bring, go to justserve.org and sign up to volunteer. People are encouraged to bring their family, friends, service group or church group, as all are welcome.
