Move afoot to name Sierra baseball field

The Manteca Unified School District board will consider establishing a committee to recommend a name for the Sierra High baseball field.

The board meets at 7 o’clock tonight at the district office, 2271 W. Louise Ave., Manteca.

Expressing interest of serving on the committee are Sierra High Principal Steve Clark, community members Vern Gebhardt and Sharon Amick plus student Yasmin Ballow. Director of Secondary Education Clara Schmiedt is proposed to serve as the committee facilitator.

Once the committee is formed, the public will be asked to submit names along with pertinent information about those they are nominating.

 In other business the board will consider:

uApproving an out-of-state trip for 40 student members of the Manteca High Chemistry Club under the leadership of advisor Bhanupreet Gill to Boston March 16-21 for a trip to experience Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in the “real world.”  The $2,532 cost is being covered by each student.

uApproving an out-of-state trip for 10 members of the East Union High AVID Close-Up group under the direction of advisor Tarsha Taylor-Godfrey  to Washington, D.C., June 2-7 to experience government and civic in person. Local grants of $6,000 have reduced the cost of the trip to each student to $1,200.

uAdopting the revised 2019-2020 student calendar with the school year for students starting Aug. 8 and ending May 22 and the revised 2020-2021student calendar with the school year starting Aug. 6 and ending May 21 to allow changes in teacher preparation and staff development days aimed for a smoother start for the school year.

uAccepting a Measure G audit report showing there was $69,103,983 on hand from the sale of bonds as of June 30, 2018.
