Retail burglaries, grand theft on rise in Manteca

Crime is rising in categories such as commercial burglaries, grand theft, rape/unlawful intercourse, and aggravated assault after two years of overall crime declining in Manteca.

The first 10 months of this year saw overall Part One Crimes — 12 felonies that the FBI tracks to rate the relative safety of communities —  up 6.25 percent going from 1,248 during the same period last year to 1,326 through the end of October this year.

That follows what had been three to four years of steady single to double digit declines in most categories.

Crime stats posted by the Manteca Police Department comparing the first 10 months of 2020 with the first 10 months of 2021 shows increases of:

*85.53 percent in grand theft going from 159 to 295.

*43.06 percent in commercial burglary going from 72 to 103.

*24.21 percent in aggravated assault going from 95 to 188.

*62.50 percent in rape/unlawful intercourse going from 16 to 26.

*52.38 percent in other burglaries going from 21 to 32.

Showing decreases during the same time period were:

*Residential burglaries going from 63 to 49 for a 22.22 percent decrease.

*Robbery going from 52 to 43 for a 17.31 percent decrease.

*Auto burglary going from 187 to 164 for a12.30 percent decrease.

*Vehicle theft going from 205 to 182 for a 11.22 percent decrease.

*Arson going from 32 to 10 for a 56.52 percent decrease.

*Homicide going from 2 to 1 for a 50 percent decrease.

Of the 16 categories of crime between felonies and misdemeanors, Manteca crime in year-to-year comparisons in October dropped in classifications.

Domestic violence cases were up 18.37 percent going from 245 to 290 and narcotic offenses were down 6.67 percent going from 150 to 140.  Alcohol offenses were up 58.72 percent going from 172 to 273.

The overall value of stolen property was up as well in year-to-year comparisons going from $4,026,205 to $4,416,172. Of that amount stolen through October of this year, 40.27 percent or $1,778,313 worth of property has been recovered.

Crime in Manteca numerically dropped in 2019 and 2020.  

There has not been a year in Manteca since at least 1998 that there have been less than 100 residential burglaries in Manteca. That could happen this year depending upon the statistics for November and December. The peak year for residential burglaries was 2008 with 323.

The numbers are based on Manteca Police crime statistic. The numbers reflect crimes police handled and those crimes reported to the department.
