A pair of electronic message signs will soon be featured in front of Ripon City Hall.
No discussion was necessary when the Ripon City Council recently approved the purchase of the pixel matrix signs from Johnson Sign Systems not to exceed $44,172 – paid via the General Department Capital Fund, according to Planning Director Ken Zuidervaart.
“The likely uses of the signs will be for community announcements, community events, etc.,” he said at the June 13 meeting.
Prior to the installation and initialization of the sign, Zuidervaart noted that staff may go ahead with the development of a usage policy to go before council for approval.
The electronic message signs are planned for the front of city hall along Wilma Avenue, where the current Ripon Police Department monument currently exists.
“The existing police station monument sign will be removed and the new sign will be located in the same vicinity,” said Zuidervaart in his report.
He added the electronic message sign – measuring 3 feet tall and 6 feet long – will be perpendicular to Wilma Avenue and will be double sided in order to be viewed from both traffic directions along Wilma Avenue.
About two months ago, council members held a workshop in which representatives from Watchfire Signs and Johnson Sign Systems provided visual displays of the different electronic signs.
“Staff did receive direction from the City Council regarding which quality (pixel matrix) the Council desired for the front of City Hall,” Zuidervaart said.
