Ripon says keeping 2-cart trash system saves $114 a year

When it comes to waste disposal, the City of Ripon offers two options for residents.

Included is the single-container or the black can, which can be delivered to the high-diversion facility – it’s there that the can is separated into multiple waste streams.

The other is the two-container collection, consisting of both the black and green cans. Folks can place their garbage, organics and recyclables in the black can and yard waste in the green can.

“Green can waste goes directly into a composting facility, which is less expensive than sending it to the high diversion facility,” said the City of Ripon in its Fall 2025 Newsletter.

With it comes savings to utility customers.

The City estimated that by sending waste from the black can to a high-diversion facility rather than implementing a three-can waste disposal system would offer savings at an estimated $114 each year per household.

Staff recently evaluated a number of options prior to that, deciding to continue offering residents the black can / green can to dispose of waste and to “deliver the waste from the black can to a high-diversion waste processing facility that is located nearby rather than the landfill,” said the City of Ripon.

The facility is also equipped to separate the waste-by-waste category, in turn, allowing the City to comply with the recent state mandate (SB 1383) while providing residents with a low-cost option to dispose of waste, especially with the new regulation not including funding from the state.
