River Islands of Lathrop’s welcome center is on the move — literally,

Crews started moving the 90- by 90-foot welcome center for the 11,000-home planned community on Wednesday from where it stood for several years off the Stewart Road entrance. It was moved along the levee to a new location a mile away along River Islands Parkway just after you cross the river on the Bradshaw Crossing bridge.

The 40,000-pound welcome center is being placed across the street from the soon-to-be-completed 500-seat Islander Field baseball complex and soccer fields.

The building had been raised some five to six feet and placed on blocks before a crew of 12 men used two large tractors – one in the front and the other in the back – to inch the building toward the edge of the levee

River Islands Project Manager Susan Dell’Osso said she hopes the Welcome Center will be ready for the Bay Area World Series for teams of players aged 13 to 18 christening the baseball stadium May 31 to June 2 at the new Islanders Field complex now under construction.
