River Islands Parkway work means traffic delays thru Aug. 25

Residents traveling from I-5 to River Islands along River Islands Parkway should plan on the potential for construction delays for the remainder of the summer.

Earlier this month, work began on streetscape improvements along River Islands Parkway from Golden Valley Parkway to McKee Boulevard,

It is a key stretch of the route that connects the state’s arterial interstate with the master planned community that will eventually contain 15,001 homes.

According to the city’s website, work on River Islands Parkway began on May 18 and is expected to continue through Aug. 25 – cutting down traffic to one lane in order to provide work crews with the space needed to complete the task.

That stretch of road is the only major street improvement the City of Lathrop has on the docket this year.

River Islands Parkway – which becomes Louise Avenue on the east side of I-5 – initially dead-ended at McKee Boulevard and provided access to homes in the Mossdale subdivision.

The construction of the Bradshaw’s Crossing bridge over the San Joaquin River provided a second point of access to River Islands and helped give emergency vehicles access to the area before both the Lathrop Manteca Fire District and the Ripon Police Department relocated to River Islands for a more central location.

Once River Islands is fully built out, both the police and fire headquarters will be centrally located based on the map of the city’s layout.

Led by the 15,001 housing units that will be constructed in River Islands over the next 20 years, Lathrop has seen a residential growth explosion over the course of the last decade which has made the city one of the fastest growing in the State of California – ballooning the population to above 30,000 residents.

When combined with the commercial, industrial, and residential growth of cities like Manteca and Tracy, Lathrop serves a major component of a South County expansion currently underway that is drastically transforming the area and attracting the sorts of retail businesses that residents once only dreamed of.
