AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME
Valedictorians, salutatorian also play tennis
Manteca High

Julia Tang, Solman Aniss and Kurtis Ma have plenty in common.

All three Manteca High seniors play tennis, where they were instrumental in leading their respective Buffalo teams to Sac-Joaquin Section titles during this past year and two years earlier.

“It was totally unexpected,” said Aniss, who along with Tang are co-valedictorians for the MHS Class of 2019.

Both have an identical 4.48 grade point average.

Ma, who is the son of Anthony Ma and Tinny Lau, is salutatorian with a 4.43 GPA.

He and Aniss teamed up during the Valley Oak League tournament, winning the league double championship.

They recently helped their squad capture the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV crown despite a third-place finish in the VOL.

“That was a highlight for us,” said Ma, who will be attending UC San Diego to study Computer Science.

Aniss, who is the son of Sarah Shafy, is going to Stanford in the fall.

He’ll major in Bio Engineering.

Aniss was also involved in Academic Decathlon and CSF.

Julia Tang is following a family tradition.

Her sister SiJie Tang was valedictorian for the MHS Class of 2016.

Sihao Tang, another sibling, was salutatorian for the MHS Class of 2017.

Julia Tang is the daughter of Rongbo Tang and Peifen Chin.

She’s going to UCLA with plans on majoring in Micro Biology.

Tang helped lead her tennis team to an unbeaten season including the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III title as the No. 1 singles player.

All three can now look forward to graduation.

Aniss has already prepared a tongue-in-cheek speech while joking with Tang to “borrow” a speech used from one of her siblings.

As for Ma?

“I’m not looking forward to doing (a graduation) speech,” he said.
