A 23-year-old woman was killed Sunday night after she was shot in the parking lot of the Manteca Marketplace shopping center – eventually making her way into a nearby business where she collapsed on the floor and ultimately died.

And at least two of the suspects in her murder are dead after a fiery crash following a pursuit by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office that ended in Oakland.

According to the Manteca Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of West Yosemite Ave. shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday for reports of somebody that was shot. The woman, who was identified by family members on social media and in a GoFundMe setup to aid the family as 23-year-old Ashley Waters, reportedly drove from where she was shot to a neighboring business where she walked inside.

Police officers began lifesaving attempts until EMS arrived, but the woman ultimately died from the injuries sustained in the shooting.

Initial reports were that four suspects fled the area. Early Monday morning Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputies began pursuing a 2007 Toyota Camry that was reported stolen in a carjacking in Oakland late Sunday night.

When deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop the vehicle on I-880 near the split with I-238 the driver exited the freeway in San Leandro and attempted to lose the police. The San Leandro Police Department assisted in the pursuit by laying down spike strips that the driver, who has not yet been identified by law enforcement, attempted to drive around. The driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree head-on on Davis Street, and when deputies approached the vehicle, they helped free a 14-year-old female juvenile who had her foot stuck in the vehicle.

Both the driver and the passenger were unconscious when officers approached the vehicle and attempts to wake them up and extract them were unsuccessful before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. The Alameda County Fire Department arrived on scene to extinguish the flames, and both the driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their identities have not been released.

Officers were able to recover a handgun from the vehicle, but it is unknown at this time whether it’s the same handgun that was used in the shooting in Manteca Sunday night that killed Waters.

Waters, who has been identified by family members as the victim of the homicide, was a graduate of East Union High School and was reportedly only in the Manteca Marketplace shopping center on Sunday night to pick up her boyfriend from work – with whom she had, according to media reports, just moved into an apartment together.

The murder is Manteca’s fourth in 2023 and comes less than a week after Manteca’s third homicide of the year – a shooting that occurred on Mono Street in Woodward Park that left one man dead. Two people, including the man authorities believe pulled the trigger, have been arrested in that case.

Friends and family members of Waters held a candlelight vigil in front of the Planet Fitness on W. Yosemite Ave. – where she died Sunday night – to honor her memory. A GoFundMe that was setup in Waters’ name had raised almost $4,500 of a $6,000 goal by Monday night. The fundraiser, which is intended to help defray funeral costs for the family, can be found by searching for Ashley Waters.
