The proposed wayfinding signs planned throughout the City of Ripon is a work in progress.

So said Planning Director Ken Zuidervaart at Tuesday’s Ripon City Council meeting.

The master plan, which has been long in the making, calls for the installation of directional signs at key spots in town to help direct traffic from Mistlin Sports Park and historic downtown.

Couple that with an electronic message center sign at City Hall.

Vice Mayor Leo Zuber would like to see the one at City Hall resemble that of the signage at downtown, in keeping with a theme.

The information-only item – no action by Council was necessary – includes staff working with the Ripon Chamber of Commerce and United Signs, which is the same company that constructed the historic downtown arches in downtown.

Zuidervaart indicated that outside of the downtown area, there would be 16 proposed sign locations.

Each would include the installation of a decorative pole, and would be similar to the City’s decorative light poles in our downtown, he noted.

The electronic message center sign would be placed in front of City Hall along Wilma Avenue. That sign would replace the existing police department monument sign and would be double sided so that traffic traveling on Wilma Avenue on either direction, said Zuidervaart.

The electronic message center sign would provide important community messages regarding upcoming events along with any pertinent information.

Zuidervaart added that all signs within the downtown area would focus on public parking locations not to mention buildings such as Ripon Memorial Library, Veterans Park, and Clarence Smit Museum.

He estimated the entire project at $137,000 paid via the General Department Capital Fund.
