A major injury crash Saturday night sent a young couple to an area hospital trauma center with major head injuries.
Manteca Police Sgt. Brian Holland said their vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Louise Avenue west of Main Street drifted from the number one lane into the number two lane and glanced off a second vehicle in the number two lane causing the vehicle to crash through a concrete block wall at the northwest corner of Louise Avenue and Crestwood Drive trapping the couple.
Firefighters from Station 3 just across the street on the northeast corner rushed to the scene and used the Jaws of Life to free the two occupants believed to be in their early 20s. They were trapped in their mid-90s Honda Accord. The driver of the second vehicle and her son in the rear seat were shaken up but uninjured in the crash, officers said.
She had reportedly been at the ATM near Main Street and Louise Avenue before the crash occurred and was on her way home in her 2010 Honda Fit at the time of the crash receiving little damage to her car.
The police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) was called out to the scene where a section of the roadway was closed until about 2 a.m. The crash occurred around 9 p.m.
