RIPON – A send-off for Joseph Greenwood is scheduled for Friday, July 27, at Pizza Plus.

A 2011 graduate of Ripon High, he and his family will be attending the London Summer Olympics thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Wish Party will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Pizza Plus is located at 110 W. Main St.

An incoming freshman at California State University, Stanislaus – he’s leaning towards studying psychology – Greenwood was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia back in February 2011 just shortly before his 18th birthday.

“Due to the timing of his diagnosis, Joe qualified for Make-A-Wish,” said Shayne Miles, Greenwood’s aunt.

His mother, Stephanie Greenwood, said Thursday that he’s been responding well to medical treatment, crediting his positive attitude.

“The road to London has been a long one for Joe,” Miles added. “He’s gone through intense chemotherapy for over a year and is currently in (chemo induced) remission.”

During his early battle with Leukemia, Greenwood, who was accepted to three colleges, was forced to put his education plans on hold.

He’s back on track and will be one of 40 selected by Make-A-Wish to attend the London Games.

Greenwood ran cross country and competed in wrestling at Ripon High.

He’ll attend the finals and medal ceremonies for both track and field and wrestling while at the Olympics.
