Sonny and Meggie made quite a splash at the Bass Pro Shops.
They’re the prized Labradors respectively belonging to Mantecans Brian Kimble and John Hildago.
At last weekend’s Splash Dog competition held at the local Bass Pro Shops, Sonny and Meggie – they’re also a couple, according to Kimble, going by the nickname of ‘Mr. and Mrs. Poo’ – finished in the top 10 of the finals of the open competition.
Sonny, a 1 ½ year-old black lab, soared 16 feet while finishing second. Meggie, 3, a chocolate lab, placed seventh.
They were the only two locally to place in the event consisting of competitors from outside the area. Gilroy’s Michelle Lawrence and her border collie, Brody, took first place in the open finals.
The Splash Dogs is a nationally recognized competition consisting of dog enthusiasts organizing and promoting dock jumping.
The dogs of various breeds chase after objects tossed by their owners into an above ground pool with visible markings to measure the distance from the dock to the water.
“We would take our dogs to the Delta to practice,” said Kimble, who, for example, entices Sonny by tossing a ball into the river.
He acquired the dog as a pup from Bass Pro. “He’s a pure hunter,” Kimble added.
He’s proud of Sonny, who, in practice, has gone 23 feet.
The local event was the first-ever for Hildago, Kimble and their two dogs. They’re already planning to take part in the Sacramento Splash Dogs event scheduled in the coming months.
