Manteca Quilters offer Orange Peel Ragtime class

Interested in learning how to do an Orange Peel Ragtime quilt? There’s one class being offered Saturday in the John McFall Room of the Manteca Public Library. And it’s free of charge.

If you happen to be one of the 140 members of the Manteca Quilters Guild, you don’t have to pay for the class. And if you’re not yet a guild member and would like to take the class gratis, simply attend the guild meeting Thursday at the library and sign up to be a member then sign up for the class. Annual dues are $20 a year; $15 for seniors age 62 and older. One has to be a guild member to attend any of the quilting classes such as the one offered on Saturday.

The meeting on Thursday opens another club year in the quilters’ 35-year history in Manteca. Appropriately enough, the theme of that meeting – the doors will open at 6 p.m. – will be “How did we get here?” which refers to the history of quilting. Featured guest speaker will be Sharon Malachowski.

A new orientation class is also starting on the first Tuesday of the month, July 2.

“This is a class to help new quilters who need help learning new techniques or pure basics,” explained 17-year Manteca Quilters member Judy Quiner. “The class is taught by members who are all capable of helping new members or any member who desires a refresher on techniques. We are excited to offer this class as we feel it will help all of us in our efforts to make fantastic quilts.”

Junior members, those who are between the ages of 10 and 18, are more than welcome to attend these classes, Quiner said. All who want to become a junior member has to have a sponsor at all club activities. A sponsor can be an existing member of the club or an adult relative.

All classes and other programs offered by the guild are offered free of charge, and are financed primarily by the group’s perennially popular Quilt Show which always takes place the first weekend of March at the MRPS Hall.
