Michael Garr is the new director of facilities at Manteca Unified.

He fills the position left vacant by Sandy Dwyer, who retired from the district at the end of last school year. In the interim, Bob Wallace has been acting as the supervisor of the facilities department and advisor to Superintendent Jason Messer on facility matters.

Garr comes highly recommended.

“His approach of doing what is in the best interest of the district as a whole and his concern for long-term consequences that comes from his decisions is admirable,” said one of Garr’s references.

Added another: “He is ambitious and always had ideas about improvement of policies and procedures to accomplish the given mission.”

Garr previously served as construction project manager at Lodi Unified, and has been involved with school facilities projects for almost 23 years.

His projects have included high school, middle school, and elementary school campuses. In addition, he’s helped with modernization projects, classroom additions, portable relocations, athletic and sports facility improvements, marquees, and shade structures.

As part of his experience in school facilities, Garr was involved in the selection, negotiation, and development of new sites.

He also worked with developers and the state facilities departments in securing funding for projects.

The school board unanimously approved Garr’s selection to the post.

Since it was a personnel matter, his appointment took place in closed session of the April 20 meeting
