South San Joaquin Irrigation District’s headquarters may soon again be inside the city limits of Manteca.
And the move is being driven ironically by the need to provide water to the offices at 11011 East Highway 120.
The San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department gave SSJID notice on Sept. 10 it had 60 days to find a remedy for excess nitrates in the main building complex’s water supply.
The three alternatives the district has are to install a new well, construct water treatment facilities, or annex to the City of Manteca.
Receiving city water is being recommended by SSJID staff as the only viable solution.
At Tuesday’s 9 a.m. meeting, the board is being asked to authorize spending $5,000 to design the water servcie connection to city standards.
It would connect to a new line that is now being installed in Austin Road some 3,000 feet away.
The city has allowed such out-of-city connections in advance of annexations in the past including the Manteca Unified School District office complex on Louise Avenue.
It would represent the city’s first annexation to the east of Austin Road.
The district built and operates the South San Joaquin County Surface Water Treatment Plant that supplies water to Manteca, Tracy, and Lathrop. The surface water is credited for the city being able to improve water pressure as well as dilute arsenic concentration in municipal water at a significantly lower cost than putting arsenic treatment facilities on several wells.
