LATHROP – It was Dr. Hla Win’s day off on Saturday. But instead of taking the time off to relax and unwind and forget about the demands of his job as a doctor at Deuel Vocational Institute, the good doctor was at the Apolinar Sangalang Park during the mid-day hours providing free health check-ups.

It was the same story for Bola Abiola, a registered nurse at DVI and one of two nurses who volunteered their time and skills, along with pharmacist Arrinola who works at a Rite-Aid Pharmacy in Merced.

“We saw about 20 patients today,” said Pastor Funke Somotun of The Redeemed Christian Church of God – Jesus House Central Valley located at 17418 Murphy Parkway in the Crossroads Commerce Center on South Harlan Road in Lathrop.

Church members have been meeting at this site for the last six years, he said. However, this is the first time they have conducted a free health clinic in the community.

“We wanted to contribute to the community that we serve, to show them we care,” he said of the reason behind their project. They hope to hold this free health check-up event about once a year, the pastor added.

For the make-shift clinic, the church hired the services of a business in Manteca which set up a tent with three “rooms” inside divided by curtains. One area was devoted to taking cholesterol readings. The doctor saw patients in another area where he explained what the cholesterol numbers meant, among others.

In addition to the health check-ups, the pastor, his wife along with his wife Yinka and other church volunteers conducted a food give-away consisting of fresh fruits such as bananas and apples.

Sunday worship services at the church are held starting at 10:30 a.m. at their meeting place on Murphy Parkway.
