LATHROP — If you have been to a community event in Lathrop during the past 12 months, it is a very good chance that you have met Ana Pacheco and Omar Ornelas.

“Omar and I have been working as hard as we can to provide an excellent example for other Lathrop teens,” stated Pacheco, Miss Lathrop 2008 in her recent farewell speech.

The competition directors agree that Pacheco and Ornelas have done a fantastic job. “They have worked incredibly hard this past year not only representing the city of Lathrop, but also balancing their responsibilities with school and work,” noted director Alanna Robins who along with co-directors Anna Candelaria, Shim Lacy-Watson and Brandy Wamsat are working to make this year’s competition a success.

“I am so honored to have been part of a great organization such as the Lathrop Scholarship Competition,” added Pacheco. “Serving as Miss Lathrop has changed my life in so many ways. I have gained skills that I will never lose and that I will continue to use through out my life. Even though, my time has come to an end, I am very excited to see the new Lathrop All Star Team all set and ready to serve the Lathrop community.”

Pacheco and Ornelas will be passing on the torch of leadership to new individuals today at 5 p.m. at the Lathrop High School Theater as a part of the 2009 Lathrop Scholarship Competitions. Tickets are available for purchase for $8 at the event.

Nine  young people ages 13-18 have stepped forward to accept the honor and challenge of serving as Miss Lathrop, Lathrop Ambassador as well as the first Miss Teen Lathrop and Teen Lathrop Ambassador, representing the city of Lathrop. The show is sure to be an entertaining evening featuring the contestants on stage in various phases of competition including Community Advocacy Speech, in which each contestant was responsible for creating their own volunteer project to be carried out in the coming year if selected as a titleholder and Impromptu Speech in which the contestants field impromptu questions from a moderator in a “mock press interview” format. Earlier in the week contestants were scored in an additional three phases of competition including Volunteer Service, Academic Achievement and Personality Interview.

The theme of the show highlights Manteca Youth Focus’ motto “Reaching for the Stars” with a special tribute to the contestants featuring Ornelas, Pacheco, Christopher Navalta California State Ambassador 2009 and the Manteca Youth Focus Entertainers. The hosts for the event will be Matthew Vaughan, former Manteca City Ambassador and California State Ambassador and Emma Henry, former Miss Manteca.

Sponsored by Manteca Youth Focus, contestants will have the opportunity to earn educational scholarships for the top three prizes thanks to the generous donations of platinum sponsors Dell’ Osso Family Farm, Lathrop Sunrise Rotary Club and San Joaquin County Correctional Officers Association. The silver sponsor is the Lathrop Chamber of Commerce and the bronze sponsor is the Lathrop Lions Club.

There are additional special awards in the areas of Volunteer Service, Academic Achievement and Most Inspirational. The audience will also get to have their “say” by selecting the “People’s Choice Award”. Tickets are still available for purchase at the door.
