More Weston Ranch school politics?

Could Manteca Unified board politics again be playing out over another Weston Ranch program?

In the first meeting since indicted board Trustee Ashley Drain resigned, the board will also discuss the future of an after school program at the site – one of the types of programs that Drain championed even before she was elected – to see whether to proceed with the program.

The last time that the board discussed allowing an after school program to operate in Weston Ranch – giving the Stockton Kids Club permission to run a swimming program at the high school – things became contentious between Trustee Sam Fant, who represents a large portion of Weston Ranch, and Trustee Nancy Teicheira, who represents a large swath of rural Manteca.

It was Teicheira that placed the item on Tuesday’s agenda, and the notation gave no reason other than to discuss the after school program in the area – which is technically part of Stockton but was assumed by Manteca Unified when growth began in the area and the district opened an elementary school.

Fant, who has claimed repeatedly that he has to vote to represent his constituency, first, is also the subject of a recall effort that may have stalled when Drain announced her resignation. She’s the second person elected in November to resign following the announcement that both she and the other trustee elected — Alexander Bronson — did not live within the area they were running to represent.

The Manteca Unified School Board meets on Tuesday at 2271 E. Louise Avenue. Open session for this particular meeting begins at 7 p.m.
