The top spellers in the Manteca Unified School District will converge this evening in the Mulvihill Theater at Manteca High.
Organized by the Elementary Education Department, the District Spelling Bee, consisting of the division winners from each school site, begins at 6:30 with fourth- through- sixth- grade students or the Elementary District competition.
The top seventh- through- ninth- grade spellers will follow, with the top finalists here advancing to the Junior Division of next month’s San Joaquin County Office of Education Spelling Bee.
The MUSD event will once again have Shasta School Principal Audrey Parker as the Mistress of Ceremony and Joseph Widmer Principal Kathy Brown serving as the Spelling Master.
The panel of judges will include school board Trustee Evelyn Moore, Senior Director of Elementary Education Cheryl Meeker, Department Supervisor for Elementary Education Diyan Dringenberg, Department Supervisor for Student Services Sharon Fang, Veritas School Principal Michael Cowan, Joshua Cowell and Nile Garden Vice Principal Kathrine Francis, ELA / ELD Coordinator Lisa Schnaidt, CCSS Coordinator Samantha Danely, and Spelling Bee coordinator Tevani Liotard.
According to SJCOE, the spelling bees at all levels are designed to promote and acknowledge exemplary student achievements.
At the county level, the 4-6 grade competition will be a two-day event, beginning on Dec. 4 with the field being whittled down top 15 spellers advancing to the Dec. 6 finals in the Wentworth Education Center, Burwood Auditorium, 2707 Transworld Dr. Stockton, beginning at 3 p.m., followed by the Junior Division event.
The winner and runner-up from both divisions of the county competition will represent SJC at the State Spelling Bee Championships in the spring.
