uDALLAS (AP) — New population estimates show that the Dallas-Fort Worth area led American cities in new residents from 2017 to 2018.
U.S. Census Bureau numbers show that the two cities, along with Arlington in between, grew by nearly 131,700 residents and have gained more than a million residents since 2010.
Houston and its neighboring cities of The Woodlands and Sugar Land also gained more than 1 million people over the last decade.
The Dallas and Houston areas are the fourth and fifth most populous metropolitan areas, respectively, in the U.S., behind New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
Two cities in Texas oil country, Midland and Odessa, were among the country’s fastest growing for the 12-month period ending in July 2018. Their populations swelled by 4.3% and 3.2%, respectively.
Overall, births and migration have grown Texas’ population by 3.5 million people since 2010.
uLARGE BRAWL INVOLVING MOSTLY TEENAGERS AT WORLDS OF FUN: KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say officers responded to a brawl involving up to 300 teenagers at the Worlds of Fun amusement park in Kansas City, Missouri.
Kansas City police say several law enforcement agencies were called to the park Saturday night when an off-duty Clay County sheriff’s deputy reported several large fights involving mostly teenagers.
Kansas City police said Sunday that no injuries were reported and no one was arrested. But police said the Clay County Sheriff’s Office issued some citations to people at the scene.
Worlds of Fun officials said in a written statement that local and park authorities broke up the altercation and removed those involved from the park.
u2 CHILDREN SHOT IN ROAD RAGE INCIDENT INVOLVING FATHER: MOUNT AIRY, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say a North Carolina man has been arrested after two children were shot in a road rage incident.
Surry County officials say 41-year-old Byron Donnell Green of Mount Airy is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging a weapon into an occupied property causing bodily injury and assault by pointing a gun. Bond for Green was set at $600,000.
Investigators say a 9-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl were shot Saturday afternoon after Green became involved in a road rage incident with their father in the Flat Rock community of Mount Airy.
The children were driven to the hospital by their father. The boy was treated and released, and the girl was reported in stable condition after undergoing surgery.
uGEORGE ZIMMERMAN BANNED FROM TINDER DATING APP: MIAMI (AP) — The ex-neighborhood watch volunteer who killed an unarmed black teen in Florida in 2012 has been banned from the dating app Tinder.
An emailed statement from Tinder cited users’ safety as a reason for removing George Zimmerman’s profile.
An article by Tampa, Florida, weekly Creative Loafing says Zimmerman used a fake name on the dating app.
Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting of Trayvon Martin on the grounds of self-defense.
He has had several run-ins with the law, including a 2015 arrest after he was accused of throwing a wine bottle at his girlfriend. The case was dropped.
In November he entered a no contest plea to resolve a charge of stalking a private investigator associated with a documentary on Martin.
u5-YEAR-OLD MICHIGAN BOY CALLS 911 TO ASK FOR MCDONALDS: WYOMING, Mich. (AP) — A 5-year-old Michigan boy had a craving for McDonald’s but his grandmother was sleeping so he called 911 and made a request.
WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids reports Iziah Hall of Wyoming asked the dispatcher: “Can you bring me McDonald’s?” Dispatcher Sara Kuberski says she told him no but reached out to the police.
Wyoming police officer Dan Patterson says the April 14 request made him laugh, so he stopped at McDonald’s on his way to check on Iziah’s home in the western Michigan city.
Patterson says he thought, “I’m driving past McDonald’s on my way there and I might as well get him something.” The officer says the first thing the boy said to him was, “My grandma’s gonna be so mad, can you please go away?”
uPOLICE: PEEPING TOM SUSPECT WITH SHOTGUN KILLED BY OFFICER: ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Police in Georgia have identified an armed man shot to death by one of the officers who responded to a “Peeping Tom” call.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department said in a news release that the man was shot Saturday night. The victim who had made the call identified a suspect and officers went to the man’s residence to try to contact him. The release posted on Facebook says one officer fired after the man “brandished a shotgun at the officers.”
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the man was identified Sunday as 63-year-old Carlton Steve Brooks. Athens police have called the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the shooting. An autopsy has been scheduled.
uOKLAHOMA WOMAN ACCUSED OF STARVING KIDS, FEEDING THEM FECES: JAY, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma mother has been charged with child neglect, accused of starving her children and feeding them dog feces.
The Tulsa World reports that 34-year-old Mary Elizabeth Moore was charged in Delaware County court this month.
The children, aged 5 and 3, are severely malnourished and have been placed on a special diet with nasal feeding tubes. They are in state custody.
An affidavit says the older child told Department of Human Services workers that she ate dog feces. The arresting officer noted the child had parasitic pinworms.
The girl also told investigators that her mother’s boyfriend “throws bottles” at her younger sibling.
The affidavit says Moore denied starving her children and feeding them dog feces.
