ATLANTA (AP) — Two brothers who were charged in an attack on their parents inside the family’s suburban had “one bad moment,” their father said.

Zachary Ervin also said that he and his wife, Yvonne, love them unconditionally and have forgiven them.

“Our kids had one bad moment, it was one bad moment,” Zachary Ervin said in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Monday.

Christopher Ervin, 22, and Cameron Ervin, 17, face charges including aggravated assault and arson after the Sept. 5 attack, police said.

Yvonne Ervin told a 911 dispatcher her sons were trying to kill her, and that they had attacked her and her husband. She said they put Xanax in their parents’ drinks before the attack.

Officers said they found a bloody scene inside the home, and Zachary Ervin emerged from the garage covered in blood. Zachary Ervin told officers that he was struck in the head with a shotgun during the attack, and officers found a bloody shotgun in a basement bedroom, according to a police report.

The brothers had also turned on the gas to the fireplace and lit a candle in a failed attempt to blow up the house, Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter has said.

“We forgive our boys because that was totally out of character for them,” Yvonne Ervin said in Monday’s interview.

Her husband also said he’s forgiven his sons.

“We communicated to our sons that we love them unconditionally,” he said. “We told them that we forgive them.”

Asked about what consequences the suspects might face, Zachary Ervin said “that’s up to God to determine that.”

“I just pray for mercy,” he said.
