uNEW YORK (AP) — It’s no joker. The night is lighting up Saturday around the world with the famous bat signal to mark a special anniversary for Batman.
DC Comics is carrying off a celebration of Batman Day to mark the 80th anniversary of the appearance of crimefighter Bruce Wayne and his masked identity.
Fan gatherings happened all over the world. But the most ambitious party plan was the illumination of the bat signal.
It started at Fed Square in Melbourne, Australia. The signal is also appearing in 13 other cities, including Tokyo, Berlin, Rome, Paris, London, Montreal, Sao Paulo and Johannesburg, as well New Yor City’s Domino Sugar Refinery.
Los Angeles also celebrated with a fan experience concert and the Batman Inaugural 5K run.

u53 PEOPLE ILLEGALLY IN US FOUND IN TRACTOR-TRAILER IN TEXAS: LAREDO, Texas (AP) — The U.S. Border Patrol says agents at a checkpoint in Texas found 53 migrants who had entered the country illegally hiding in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer.
The Border Patrol said Friday that the migrants were found Tuesday during a search of the truck at a checkpoint on Interstate 35 north of Laredo. The migrants, who were from Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, and the driver, who is a U.S. citizen, were arrested and processed.
The Border Patrol says the temperature inside the trailer was 105 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius). Officials say those on board were evaluated and no one required medical attention.
On Sept. 11, a U.S. citizen was arrested in Arizona after 31 Mexicans who were illegally in the U.S. were found in the tractor-trailer he was driving.

uALASKA GOP SCRAPS 2020 PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY, HELPING TRUMP: ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The Alaska Republican Party has canceled holding a presidential primary in 2020.
In a statement Saturday, the party’s State Central Committee passed a rule saying a primary “would serve no useful purpose” because Republican Donald Trump is president.
Earlier this month, Republican leaders in Nevada, South Carolina and Kansas voted to scrap their presidential nominating contests in 2020, erecting more hurdles for the long-shot candidates challenging President Donald Trump.
Canceling primaries, caucuses and other voting is not unusual for the party of the White House incumbent seeking a second term. Doing so allows Trump to try to consolidate his support as Democrats work to winnow their large field of candidates.
Challengers have emerged to Trump, including former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld and Joe Walsh, a former Illinois congressman. Others may join them.

uITEMS LINKED TO CRIME DUO BONNIE & CLYDE SOLD FOR $186K: DALLAS (AP) — Several personal items related to 1930s Texas outlaw Clyde Barrow have sold at a Boston auction for nearly $186,000.

Auction house executive vice president Bobby Livingston says a sawed-off shotgun that was in the possession of the Barrow gang in 1933 sold for $68,750. The weapon was confiscated after a shootout in Joplin, Missouri, left two lawmen dead.
A draft of a Dallas police “wanted” poster for Barrow sold for $4,375.
All of the buyers wish to remain anonymous.
Bidding for a poetry book written by Parker reached about $25,000 before the consigner withdrew the lot.

uRAPE FOLLOWED THREAT OF FORCED INCEST, PROSECUTORS SAY: NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say a man raped a woman in New York after giving her the option of that, being killed or having sex with her son.
The Queens district attorney’s office says 33-year-old Joshua Henderson raped and robbed the victim in her home Monday.
Prosecutors say Henderson dressed as a construction worker to get into the building.
They say he tied the woman and her adult son up and grabbed jewelry and cash. They say he then told her of her choices and raped her.
Henderson was arraigned Thursday and held without bail.
Information on Henderson’s lawyer wasn’t available. The Daily News reports that Henderson’s wife, Joanna Henderson, said DNA evidence would prove her husband’s innocence.

uMAN ACCUSED OF KILLING WOMAN’S DOG WITH HAMMER GETS 9 MONTHS: Man accused of killing woman’s dog with hammer gets 9 months
PORTAGE, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin man accused of killing a woman’s puppy with a hammer has been sentenced to nine months in jail.
Thirty-two-year-old Brandon Shearer, of Portage, learned his sentence on Friday. He pleaded no contest in May to the mistreatment of an animal causing death, disorderly conduct and contacting a victim after a domestic abuse arrest. A no contest plea isn’t an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing purposes.
Prosecutors allege that Shearer killed the 6-month-old dog with a roofing hammer because he was upset it had urinated and defecated in the woman’s house.
A judge set several sentencing conditions for Shearer, including that he serve four years of probation, comply with treatment programs, undergo anger management counseling and maintain “absolute sobriety.”PORTAGE, Wis.
