IRVINE  (AP) — Mazda will keep its U.S. headquarters in California and will expand into a state-of-the-art facility with a 10-year lease.

The automaker said Monday that it will occupy five floors and 102,000 square feet of a 21-floor building in Irvine.

Mazda moved its headquarters to Irvine in 1987 after first establishing itself in Compton in 1970.

Employees at the location will continue to oversee sales, marketing, parts and customer service for nearly 700 Mazda dealers in the U.S. and Mexico.

The Orange County city is about 40 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Toyota moved its U.S. headquarters and about 3,000 jobs from the Los Angeles suburbs to the outskirts of Dallas nearly two years ago.
