• AIRPORT SECURITY OFFICER KILLED IN OHIO: CLEVELAND (AP) — A Transportation Security Administration officer was fatally shot by her husband Sunday before he killed himself on an off-site parking lot at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, authorities said.

Before turning the gun on himself, the husband fired at a second TSA employee but missed, police spokesman Sgt. Sammy Morris said. The late morning shooting at an airport employee parking lot was an apparent homicide and suicide, Morris said.

Morris said the husband and wife were estranged, but investigators weren’t sure of a motive for the shooting.

The wife and the second TSA employee were commuting to work; the husband apparently followed his wife to the lot, blocked her in her car by his vehicle, and then began firing, Morris said. The other TSA worker wasn’t hurt, police said.

Morris said the wife and the other TSA employee, a man, were not romantically involved.



• COMEDIAN KATT WILLIAMS ARRESTED NEAR SACRAMENTO: SACRAMENTO  (AP) — Comedian Katt Williams has been arrested in northern California on a felony warrant related to a police chase.

Williams was arrested Friday night in Dunnigan, about 25 miles north of Sacramento, by Yolo County deputies. He was released from the county jail Saturday after posting bail.

The sheriff’s department confirmed Williams’ arrest late Saturday, but staffers on duty didn’t have details. A spokesman for the comedian didn’t immediately return a call and email.

The California Highway Patrol says Williams fled officers on a three-wheeled motorcycle on Nov. 25 after being spotted driving on a downtown Sacramento sidewalk.

The CHP said Williams was asked to stop and refused, leading to the pursuit.

The CHP says Williams nearly hit five people during the chase, which police ended for safety reasons.



• WRONG-WAY DRIVER CAUSES FATAL CRASH ON CA HIGHWAY: VICTORVILLE  (AP) — Authorities say a man drove the wrong way for at about 100 mph on a Southern California highway before causing a deadly head-on collision.

Saturday morning’s crash on Interstate 15 in Victorville shut down all but one lane of the freeway, causing traffic to back up for miles.

The California Highway Patrol told the Victorville Daily Press that 33-year-old Ilich Ernest Vargas of Phelan drove the wrong way for at least six miles before colliding with a Mazda sedan.

A woman passenger in Vargas’ car died at the scene, while he and the Mazda driver suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The CHP said Vargas fought with rescuers and had to be subdued with a stun gun. He was arrested for being under the influence and causing a major-injury collision.



• CALIF SEES FEWER TEACHERS AS ENROLLMENT TRENDS UP: LOS ANGELES (AP) — Years of pink slips have taken a toll on California’s teachers to be sure, but the dim job market has also had an impact on people wanting to become teachers at a time when the state’s population of children reaching school age is rising.

While the numbers do not yet signal an outright teacher shortage, officials say they point to a worrisome trend of a graying workforce and fewer entrants into what has traditionally a middle-class mainstay occupation.

Juliet Tiffany-Morales, research analyst for SRI International who has studied education trends, says so far the profession is holding its own because school districts have increased class sizes to cope with teacher layoffs, and the number of retiring teachers has more or less equaled the number of new teachers.



• OBAMAS ATTEND ANNUAL HOLIDAY CONCERT IN WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) — An annual holiday concert attended by President Barack Obama and his family includes something non-traditional this year: a performance by South Korean rapper and Internet sensation PSY.

The “Gangnam Style” rapper, born Park Jae-sang, apologized Friday for using what he says was “inflammatory and inappropriate language” during anti-U.S. protests at concerts in 2002 and 2004.

Obama traditionally attends the “Christmas in Washington” concert of carols and songs to benefit Children’s National Medical Center. The 31st installment is scheduled for Sunday evening at the National Building Museum, and to be hosted for a second year by comedian Conan O’Brien.

Other scheduled performers include Diana Ross, Demi Lovato, Scotty McCreery, Chris Mann of “The Voice” fame and “Smash” star Megan Hilty.

The concert is scheduled to air Dec. 21 on TNT.



• FLA MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO SMUGGLING BIRDS FROM CUBA: MIAMI (AP) — A Miami man faces up to 20 years in prison for allegedly trying to smuggle birds from Cuba into the United States in his pants.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says Alberto Diaz Gonzalez pleaded guilty Thursday to attempting to import undeclared wildlife from the Caribbean island. He is scheduled to be sentenced in February.

Diaz returned to Miami from Havana on Oct. 20. Court documents show he told U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in Miami that he was not carrying any wildlife.

But authorities say when officers searched Diaz, they found 16 Cuban bullfinches hidden in his pants. They say Diaz admitted the birds were from Cuba and that he planned to sell them.



• GAS PRICES DROP 10 CENTS OVER PAST 3 WEEKS: CAMARILLO  (AP) — The average U.S. price of a gallon of gasoline has dropped ten cents over the past three weeks.

That’s according to the Lundberg Survey of fuel prices, released Sunday, which puts the price of a gallon of regular at $3.38..

In California, the lowest average price was $3.42 in Stockton and the highest was $3.73 in Bakersfield. The average statewide for a gallon of regular was $3.52, down a dime.
