CHASE ENDS AS MAN RUNS INTO A MISS. POLICE ACADEMY: BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — Police say a man who fled from a Mississippi traffic stop was apparently so focused on getting away he unknowingly ran into a law enforcement academy.

Biloxi Police Chief John Miller Police Chief John Miller tells The Sun-Herald 30-year-old Roger Beasley Jr. was stopped by officers last Wednesday on U.S. 90 in the city. Miller’s statement says Beasley jumped from his vehicle and ran.

According to police, Beasley didn’t notice marked police cars outside the Harrison County Law Enforcement Training Academy. He says Beasley ran into the building while training was in session — and arrested.

Authorities say Beasley was booked on charges including possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, resisting arrest and careless driving.  

BLACK-AND-WHITE STRIPES ARE THE NEW ORANGE: SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan sheriff says he’s trading his inmates’ orange jumpsuits for black-and-white stripes, in part due to pop culture.

Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel tells The Saginaw News that all-orange jumpsuits are increasingly viewed as fashionable, especially because they’re seen on popular TV shows such as the Netflix smash hit “Orange Is the New Black.”

Federspiel says “some people think it’s cool to look like an inmate of the Saginaw County Jail ... wearing all orange jumpsuits out at the mall or in public.” He says inmates sometimes work in public, and he doesn’t want there to be any confusion.

The jailhouse fashions come relatively cheap. The sheriff says the jumpsuits, which last for about two to three years, cost $11.73 apiece.

200 PAIRS OF PANTIES STOLEN AT EAST GEORGIA MALL: AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Authorities are investigating after a thief at an east Georgia shopping mall made off with a bagful of women’s unmentionables.

Richmond County sheriff’s officials say a thief stole 200 pairs of panties from Victoria’s Secret in Augusta Mall shortly before noon Saturday.

The Augusta Chronicle reports that security video shows a male entering the store and stuffing the underwear into a large shopping bag. Authorities say he left without paying for the merchandise, valued at $1,900.

NEW YORK COURT: SPANKING WAS NOT EXCESSIVE: CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — A New York court has ruled that a Long Island father used reasonable force when he spanked his 8-year-old son for cursing at an adult.

The state Appellate Division dismissed a child neglect proceeding against the man last week.

The father spanked his son in October 2012 during a party at a friend’s house. Suffolk County social services officials alleged he used an open hand and then used a belt on the boy’s buttocks, legs and arms after they got home. A county family court found him in neglect.

But the appellate division said under the circumstances the spanking “did not constitute excessive corporal punishment.” It said there was insufficient evidence to prove he hit his son with a belt.

GAY, TRANSGENDER WORKERS GAIN US BIAS PROTECTION: WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Monday ordered employment protection for gay and transgender employees who work for the federal government or for companies holding federal contracts, telling advocates he embraced the “irrefutable rightness of your cause.”

“America’s federal contracts should not subsidize discrimination against the American people,” Obama declared at a White House signing ceremony.

Obama said it was unacceptable that being gay is still a firing offense in many places in the United States, and he called on Congress to extend the ban to all employers. But legislation that would extend the ban has become embroiled in a dispute over whether religious groups should get exemptions.

BOY ALSO INJURED FINGERS ON DISNEY WORLD RIDE: ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A report says a 12-year-old boy suffered cuts to four fingers on Walt Disney World’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride, three months before a British tourist had a similar accident.

The report made public Monday by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services shows the boy lacerated his fingers in mid-April.

  The British tourist lost two fingertips on his right hand almost two weeks ago while on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
