• GIRL, 10, CRASHES SUV INTO COLORADO DMV OFFICE: DENVER (AP) — A 10-year-old girl has been cited for reckless driving after her mother’s SUV crashed into a Division of Motor Vehicles office in the Denver suburb of Parker.
Police Sgt. Andy Coleman says a woman parked outside the office Monday and left her 12- and 10-year-old daughters in the vehicle. That’s when the younger girl apparently started the car and put the vehicle in gear.
Coleman says the SUV rolled slowly through the office’s front window until the mother jumped in to stop it from causing more damage. No one was injured.
Anyone 10 or older can be charged with a crime in Colorado, so police gave the girl a ticket for reckless driving.
Coleman says the mother wasn’t ticketed because she says she didn’t leave the car running.
• 3 ACCUSED OF MAILING METH TO HAWAII IN DUMMY HEAD: HONOLULU (AP) — There was something unusual about three mannequin heads found inside a UPS parcel being mailed from San Bernardino, Calif., to Hawaii: They each had two pounds of methamphetamine stuffed inside them, authorities said.
Now, three men in face drug charges in Hawaii. One of the men, Anthony Buzio Sanchez, pleaded guilty in federal court in Honolulu on Monday to a charge of attempted possession with intent to distribute.
Through a Spanish-speaking interpreter, Sanchez said he intended to sell the drugs to pay for his father’s cancer treatment. Sanchez, who said he was born in Mexico and is living in the United States illegally, faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison when he’s sentenced in June.
• 2 SHOT IN GA. STORE BUSY WITH STORM CUSTOMERS: LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Two women were shot Monday inside a suburban Atlanta supermarket that was busy with customers trying to stock up before a winter storm that’s widely predicted to hit the area, police said.
Lawrenceville police spokesman Greg Vaughn told local news outlets the shooting happened at a Kroger and that two people of interest were taken into custody. Vaughn said the shooting came after some sort of fight or argument but didn’t have details.
“The scene is a little chaotic,” Vaughn told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “You can probably imagine with everybody stocking up on bread and milk,” he said. Several shoppers told WSB-TV that they hid in freezers while police cleared the store.
Vaughn said the women have been hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. He said one woman was shot in her leg and the other was shot in her torso.
• RUBIO DODGES QUESTION ON HIS PAST MARIJUANA USE: MIAMI (AP) — Sen. Marco Rubio is declining to say whether he ever smoked marijuana.
The Florida Republican and potential presidential candidate dodged a direct question at an education forum Monday, saying his own drug experience is irrelevant.
In his words: “If I tell you that I haven’t, you won’t believe me. And if I tell you that I did, then kids will look up to me and say, ‘Well, I can smoke marijuana because look how he made it.”
Rubio opposes legalizing the recreational use of marijuana. He said like most teenagers he made dumb decisions when he was younger, and he said he didn’t need the help of marijuana or alcohol to further that.
• MISSING OHIO COLLEGE STUDENT FROZE TO DEATH: GRANVILLE, Ohio (AP) — An official at a central Ohio college says a student who was the subject of intensive search over the weekend apparently died of hypothermia after falling asleep outside.
Denison University student David Hallman III was last seen leaving a downtown Granville restaurant early Saturday. The 21-year-old Erie, Pa., native was found Saturday night outside a garage in a condo complex about a half mile away.
Laurel Kennedy, vice president for student development, wrote in a memo to the university community that “it appears he had fallen asleep and then succumbed to hypothermia.” Police said alcohol may be a factor.
Hallman was a history major who was well-known on the campus of about 2,100 students. He was a former member of the swimming team.
